It Began With a Lunch with Some Old Banking Friends

Many years ago I worked in commercial banking.  I left that field to become a professional trader and investor but I’ve kept up with my contacts.  About a year ago Dick Z. called me for lunch.

Don explained that what he does is look at patterns often including billions of numbers.

He is looking for variations or changes that could indicate something out of the ordinary going on.

Just out of curiosity I asked him if he thought his models could be used to predict the occurrence of numbers in games of chance.

He thought about it for a moment and said he didn’t see why not.

We talked some more and I told him what I had in mind.  We agreed to meet the following week at my office.  I told him I might have a special assignment for him!

 

 

Don Trains His Data Mining Algorithms on the Game of Roulette!

Don and I met and I explained what I had in mind.  I handed him a memory stick with over 250,000 recorded roulette decisions.  These were compilations of roulette spins recorded on physical wheels as well as computer-generated numbers recorded from online play.

Don Discovers Pair Betting!

Eleven days later I heard from Don.  He called me and seemed very excited.

“I’ve got something for you.  I think you are going to like it a lot.”

 

We met two days later for another lunch.  Don had set up thick notebook summarizing his algorithmic testing of from three to thirty rounds of roulette and his results.

As I sipped on an iced tea he flipped the pages of his notebook summarizing one test after another.

Finally I said, “Why don’t we just cut to the chase.  Just show me what you think works the best and tell me why it does.”

He seemed a little disappointed that I cut his demonstration short.  He flipped to the back of his notebook and handed it over to me.

The title of the page was “Iterations of Pair Betting applied in arithmetically expanding sets of bets.”

 

I didn’t get where I am by being shy.  I told him upfront, “I have no idea what that means.  Why don’t you explain in terms of roulette bets and wheels spins.”

I Called on L.R., a Math Wizard Who Did Contract Work for a University

While I felt like Don had made real progress with his concept of Pair Betting I wasn’t sure that his approach would come up with the answer I needed.

Specifically, I was concerned that his models weren’t focused enough on bet sizes and controlling risk.

I decided to call on my old friend L.R.

 

L.R. works on a contract basis with a university and a couple of clients I found for him.  He is really good at what he does and he has helped me several times with both trading and gambling system issues.  

I called him and he immediately accepted a lunch.  L.R. doesn’t get to go out as much as he would like and I have found that one of his weaknesses is food. 

I suggested Italian food.  We met at a small Italian restaurant that still uses the red and white checked table clothes and specializes in Neapolitan cuisine.

We ordered Ravioli Capresi and Pizza alla Napoletana.  After the waiter took our orders I started talking about the roulette project.

L.R. made a few notes on a piece of paper in his pocket and then gave up when his pencil lead broke.  I told him not to worry that I had it all written down.

The entrees came and as we ate we bantered ideas back and forth.

 

L.R. could see the merits in pair betting but was concerned with determining the optimum number of bets.

I was still concerned about determining bet sizes but I realized we really couldn’t solve that problem until we knew how many Pair Bets we should make to be sure to have a win in a short enough number of plays.

 

By the time the dessert arrived, Baba al Rhum for him and Delizie al Limone for me, we had a plan.

Don Called Me a Week Later With What He Called a Major Update

This time we met in Don’s office.  His desk was covered with notebooks and stacks of papers.  The only chair in front of his desk was filled with books. Don placed the books on the floor and I sat down.

Don rummaged around and finally found what he was looking for. 

“I’ve narrowed everything down. We will make from seven to nine pair bets and leave them up for ten rounds of play.”

He pulled out the summaries of his work.  As usual my eyes started to glaze as he discussed iterations of bets and duration of roulette decision-betting.

At this point I told him about L.R.  I suggested that I take all of his work to L.R. and see what he came up with when he added the dimensions of probability of outcomes with a limit of bet sizes.

At first Don seemed to resent someone else stepping into his project until I explained how L.R. would just be refining Don’t pioneer work and that there was no doubt the Don was the real genius behind this project.

That seemed to please him.  At this point I was happy to throw the project back in L.R.’s camp and see if he could bring Don’s work down to earth.

 

L.R. Clears Up the Confusion!

I went back to L.R. for some additional work. I told him that we had narrowed the number of pair bets to from seven to nine Pair Bets.

I suggested that he put some dollar limits on the betting and see if we could narrow it down to a smaller number of Pair Bets.

L.R. asked what I had in mind.

“Let’s work with the number $500.  See if you can develop a winning system with a maximum of $500 risked.  And, find out how many Pair Bets we need to use to beat the game.”

L.R. got it right away.  Unlike most researchers, L.R. has had some real life gambling experiences with me.  I found out that he not only liked it but he was really good at resolving questions like “how many bets should we use?”

 

L.R. sent me an email with his solution.

“Try seven bets.  It worked for the Seven Wonders of the World and the Seven Deadly Sins.  It will work for this system too!”

   

At This Point It Was Up to Me to Fine-Tune the System!

In My First Online Test I Won Over $5,000 in an Hour and Fifteen Minutes!

I had a deposit of $301 left in one of the online casinos where I play.  This was more than enough for my purposes.

 

Before I started playing I placed a legal pad next to my keyboard so I could track my play.  I started out making $1 bets.

The ideal version of roulette is the single-zero wheel. Unfortunately, there are no single zero roulette wheels in our area.  When I discussed the results of my play online he didn’t hesitate to suggest a trip to Las Vegas.

He found a special on suites at M Resort and we booked two rooms for the following week  Ever since I started traveling to Las Vegas I’ve been a believer in visiting during the middle of the week when lines are shorter and minimum bets are often lower.  

We arrived in Vegas on a Monday night.  We rented a car and headed south.  M Resort is about 10 miles south of the Strip on Las Vegas Boulevard.  It was a good place for us to set up our headquarters as it was convenient to the places we planned to play.

We pulled up to the shiny blue glass-framed M Resort.  The lobby was interesting with over 800 calla lilies (fake I think but they smell real).  No problems with checking in. L.R. got one of the 550 square foot suits while I took a 1,095 square-foot classic suite with an executive office area.  This would be become our office away from home.  L.R. found an MP3 docking station while I set up my laptop and a printer.

I looked at my watch which read 2:03 local time.  “Let’s go try out their single-zero wheel,” I said.

 

L.R. and I were ready.  We had a game plan for each casino where we planned to play and M Resort was the perfect place to start play.  We planned to start out making $5 bets which was perfect for their $10 minimum bet wheel. (Anytime our total bet was less than $10 we simply added a wager on either red or black to meet the casino’s minimum bet.

There was only one wheel but we had figured out a system where we wouldn’t be making the same bets at the same time.  I started betting first and L.R. wouldn’t start until I was two rounds into my betting.  Then he would start his bets.  Because of the nature of the system with the staggered start times we reduced overlap to a minimum.

Each of us kept track of our own bets and used tracking forms we had made for the system.  Before we left I had set up the forms in little bound notebooks so we could just flip to the page we were using and track our bets. 

 

Incidentally, we used our tracking system the whole time we played in Las Vegas and the only comments we got were favorable like “Nice notebook.  Can I buy one of those?”

Our game plan was to play for an hour and then take a break and analyze our play before continuing to play.

 

After an hour’s worth of play I signaled L.R. that it was time to take a break.  I hit a win and two spins later L.R. got his win.  We colored up and headed for the cashier.

 

After cashing in we compared notes.

I had won $1,487 for an hour’s play. 

L.R. had pulled in $1,393 for his play.

 

I figured he might win a little less as he had played fewer rounds than I had because of using the staggered play approach.  To even this out we planned for me to be the follow-up player for next time we played.  By alternating who went first and who followed we felt like we would pretty much balance our winnings.

We went back to our rooms and took a little break. L.R. went to his suite and listened to music.  I went online, checked some stock trades and then analyzed our play.

Our winnings were right in line with a table averaging 60 to 70 spins an hour.  I recorded our winnings read a little and then decided I was too anxious to play to rest.  I called L.R. and five minutes later we met down in the lobby and walked to the coffee shop.  I had iced tea and he had coffee and ten minutes later we were ready to start playing again.

For our second session we decided to start out making $10 bets and after the first hour take a brief break and decide whether to continue play and possibly increase our betting level.

This time L.R. led off and I played follow-up.  We played about 15 minutes and I checked my chips – I was up over $700.  Play at this level was pulling in the money very quickly.

 

We put in our first hour of play.  We each had many stacks of chips in front of us.  We colored up, headed to cashier and then compared results –

I had won $2,769 while L.R. was up by $2,982.  We both agreed that we wanted to immediately move up to making $15 bets when we resumed play.

 

We walked around, checked out the attractive pool area and then headed back to play.  At my suggestion we had left most of our winnings with the cashier.  We had made arrangements to draw on our own deposited funds so that we wouldn’t have to carry so much cash around.

Why is this important? Because having two zeroes gives a house edge of 5.26%; with a single zero it's just 2.7%. Better still, European Roulette has the 'en prison' (half back) rule. He turned bright red.  “They insisted on giving me an escort to the cage.  Sort of a house policy for big winners,” he grinned.

L.R. had done very well at European Roulette.  His winnings totaled $13,487.

Over the Next Two Days We Played at the MGM Grand, The Wynn and The Bellagio.
